Highlights & Distinctive Features
Key Highlights
National Sun Yat-sen University (NSYSU), founded in 1980, is one of Taiwan’s top research universities, with ten colleges, over 10,000 students, and nearly 600 faculty members. Located in scenic Kaohsiung, NSYSU benefits from proximity to major transport hubs and Southern Taiwan’s innovation ecosystem.
The university empowers researchers to do their best work by providing practical research support and resources, fostering cross-disciplinary collaboration, and establishing the policies and research environment needed for innovation to grow. These efforts have led NSYSU to great progress in the Ministry of Education’s Featured Areas Research Center Program. The number of approved centers at NSYSU grew from two in Phase I to six in Phase II (Stage 1), and then to seven in Phase II (Stage 2)—marking the fastest growth rate in Taiwan. Today, NSYSU ranks second in Taiwan for the total number of featured areas research centers, tied with National Yang Ming Chiao Tung University, and only behind National Taiwan University. This rapid growth in research capacity shows NSYSU’s strong dedication to offering a top-notch platform for exceptional talent and cutting-edge discoveries.
Also, the university maintains strong ties with leading industries such as China Steel, ASE Group, and TSMC. It excels in research fields including ocean acidification, underwater vehicles, 6G MIMO systems, silicon photonics, intelligent e-commerce, and international sinology. NSYSU also hosts Asia’s only Aerosol Science Research Center.
To strengthen regional healthcare, NSYSU established a College of Medicine in 2022. Under President Chih-Peng Li’s leadership since 2024, the university is advancing its vision as an “AI²” university—Artistic & Inclusive and Advanced & Innovative.

International Collaboration Highlights
In recent years, NSYSU has steadily expanded international collaboration by joining programs funded by Taiwan’s Ministry of Education (MOE) and the National Science and Technology Council, while also drawing on faculty networks. These efforts have strengthened partnerships with overseas institutions and broadened NSYSU’s global research connections.
Through the MOE University Academic Alliance in Taiwan (UAAT) program, NSYSU serves a key coordinating role with many international universities. Since 2024, it has also acted as the convening university for an engineering integrated program with Japan’s Kyushu Okinawa Open University (KOOU). By organizing academic delegations, coordinating research calls, and carrying out sub-projects, NSYSU has deepened Taiwan–Japan academic ties, with plans to sustain and expand this work in 2026.
NSYSU further promotes collaboration with benchmark university like UGent in Belgium, expands UK links via the Taiwan–UK University Consortium (TUKUC)with 2025 project funding, and maintains stable cooperation with Vilnius Gediminas Technical University (VILNIUS TECH) through a jointly funded program for three years in a row.
Building on these foundations, NSYSU will continue to scale these partnerships in 2026 to further elevate its international research impact.
Regarding our industry–academia research, NSYSU provides a cross-college platform linking global industry and research partners across semiconductors and advanced processes, smart manufacturing and systems integration, ocean technology and sustainable energy, AI/communications/cybersecurity, and fintech/data. A mature industry–academia governance framework—contract review, risk controls, IP ownership, and technology transfer—reduces collaboration risk and supports long-term engagement.
Located in southern Taiwan’s key innovation hub, NSYSU offers an English-friendly research and teaching environment and a cost-effective, welcoming living setting for international scholars.
Research & Industry Collaboration Highlights
National Sun Yat-sen University (NSYSU) has built a distinctive portfolio of research strengths that spans next-generation communications (6G) and sensing, world-leading aerosol science for public health and air quality, and cutting-edge biomedical innovation—from metabolic liver disease solutions to advanced PET imaging materials. Complementing these are globally competitive capabilities in crystal and semiconductor materials (including SiC), data- and AI-driven digital commerce and sustainable business, strategic management and human capital analytics, and an internationally connected Sinology platform that addresses today’s global challenges through cross-cultural scholarship.
In terms of industry–academia research, it is designed for real-world deployment and translation, delivering outcomes such as commissioned R&D, technology transfer and patent licensing, and large-scale government-funded programs. A mature commercialization pipeline—validated by sustained growth in transfer and outreach cases—moves research beyond publication into industry adoption, creating a virtuous cycle. Priority areas align closely with market needs: semiconductor materials/devices, photonics/materials/precision manufacturing, AI and big data, communications/cybersecurity/systems engineering, unmanned aerial/vehicle systems, and marine and underwater technologies.
International scholars gain access to stable research funding, industry-facing testbeds, and pathways to commercialization and entrepreneurship.
